From A blogger...to a blogger..
No wonder her blog has been recognised as one of the UK's best Fashion blogs by international magazines and brands such as Elle, Topshop and Selfridges. Girl A la Mode, which was launched in 2008, has great and very influential articles, with a witty and young touch on the latest trends. The "girl a la mode" behind it all is blogger/designer Charlie May. Recently graduated from UWE Bristol, her graduate collection already gained the likes of Anna Trevelyan, Nicola Formichetti's Assistant, for work on Lady Gaga's latest album.
Her blog quickly became one of my daily duties (and it should become yours!) and I finally got the opportunity to interview Charlie over the week end...And I thought, why not share this great experience to my fellow readers!?! So here it is , ENJOY
Hi Charlie, First of all , how did it all start for you?
I started the blog when I was in my second year of university as a way of offloading all the inspiration building up on my desktop. It quickly grew into a place for my love of high fashion and the avant-garde.
How would you describe your style?
Androgynous, monochrome, heavily inspired by Belgian and traditional English style.
At what point did you realise/ start getting recognition?
I wasn't really aware of it until Company Magazine did a feature on me along with Shini from Park and Cube, What Katie Wore and Red Carpet Fashion Awards. That was a pretty major moment for me.
What are your sources of inspiration?
Great design is a huge inspiration, blogging about catwalk shows to individual pieces I've found. How a garment's made fascinates me. I'm also inspired by photographers like Guy Bourdin, and getting constant updates from around the world through blogs and online media.
Briefly, how would you describe your day?
My days vary, at the moment things are fairly chilled as I'm in between collections. Emailing, press days, appointments and sorting out my design site is what I'm currently up to. All the crazy of creating my next AW12 collection will begin at the end of the month.
Apart from blogging, I saw you are in the process of creating your own collection. Where did this idea come from? How would you describe your upcoming collection?
Yes, I studied Fashion Design at university, I've always been designing but I'm really excited to have started my own label and for it to have been so well received. I don't want to give too much away about my AW12 collection but expect signature Charlie May layering and a richer colour palette.
Any other projects in mind?
No, I think I've got my hands pretty full at the moment!
Some final words, advice for our fellow readers/bloggers out there?
Follow your dreams but work hard and be realistic.
Thank you much very Charlie!
